In Which We See If I Can Keep This Up

18 Feb

I’m never quite sure what words shouldn’t be capitalized in a heading. Ah, well.

I’m guessing that at least one of you forgot you signed up for updates from me, right? Haha! I’m going to try to make a triumphant comeback in the blogging world (because, you know, I was so big before). It’ll be abbreviated as I don’t have time to post four times a week as I used to, but I’m hoping it’ll work out. I’ll also put up intermittent book reviews as I read, though that tends to go on hiatus rather quickly. I have at least five books I really want to read and review. So little time!

As to what I shall be blogging about, likely on a weekly basis: I’ve signed up for a half-marathon! That’s right, the girl with CFS is going to run 13.1 miles in October. I’m actually really excited about it. It gives me a goal to work towards and kicks my butt in gear with running. I just started this week, so here’s an update on what’s going on.

First, I need to work up to running 30 minutes straight. I’ll worry about pace after I get more endurance, which is equally challenging as the treadmills in the school gym are all based on kilometers. I feel like a champ running at 8.0 easily. So far, I’m really pleased with how much I’ve been able to run. I started with a running schedule and threw that out after the second day. Now I’m just going to run for as long as I can and make up the intervals as I go. Zen running for the win.

I’ll also be strength training, both for my health (I feel so much better when I’m active) and to help with the running. This week was…interesting. I’ve gotten DOMS before (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), but it’s always been limited to soreness and I’ve been able to work around it for the week or so that it lasts. This time, though, my muscles swelled! I’ve never had that happen before; it was hard to bend my arms because my biceps were so swollen. As per my brother’s suggestion (I love having an exercise physiologist in the family), I didn’t took a day off of resistance training and took ibuprofen to help with the inflammation. We’re in the clear now and ready to dial it up to eleven this week.

So that’s what I’m up to! Classes, of course, but do you really want to hear about what I’m reading for a course on early Medieval Ireland? I doubt it, but I’m enjoying the classes. I have a massive beast of a masters dissertation coming up soon and meetings this week to talk with some professors about my (non-existent) topic. I’ll keep you apprised of the school situation, in case you’re so inclined to be interested.

And I’m off! I may or may not be paint-balling with my flatmate tomorrow for his birthday. It all depends on how many people are actually going. Either way, sleep is calling…

About Dork Avec Une Spork

It'd be nice to be a professional student; I love accents, but can't figure out why people can't understand me when I say something like "coffee" or "laundry"; Books are the way to my heart, followed closely by food; I think life is sad without at least a little whimsy; I aim to never mature above 5-years-old, at least in some way; Mayonnaise is my mortal enemy, the Dr. Horrible to my Captain Hammer (because Nathan Fillion rules); I'm constantly convinced someone or something is watching me like I'm on TV; being double-jointed isn't nearly as sexy as it sounds and I can make people turn green far easier than turning them on; Love me, love my duck hamper; I can stare at a wall and entertain myself, it's one of the glories of being a daydreamer; I love old B-horror movies; More to come...
